Abstract

Language barriers in healthcare remain a significant obstacle to equitable patient care in the United States, especially among individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). These barriers are associated with miscommunication, reduced patient satisfaction, and poorer health outcomes (Jacobs 2007). This study aims to assess the presence and impact of language barriers at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, by focusing on both patient and provider perspectives. The study utilized two anonymous surveys: one for LEP patients and one for healthcare providers. Patients self-evaluated their English proficiency in all language skills and answered open-ended questions regarding interpreter use, communication satisfaction, and perceived quality of care. Provider surveys assessed frequency of LEP interactions, access to interpreter services, and perceived effects on patient safety and care delivery. Qualitative analysis of data is intended to examine relationships between interpreter use, provider confidence, and access to language resources on patient satisfaction. It is anticipated that lower English proficiency will be associated with decreased patient satisfaction, reduced understanding of medical instructions, and lower perceived quality of care. Greater access to interpreter services is expected to correlate with improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. Providers with limited access to language resources are predicted to report lower communication confidence and greater concern for patient safety. Findings from this study are expected to highlight the importance of interpreter services and propose strategies to improve communication, enhance provider training, and promote more equitable care for linguistically diverse populations.
