Abstract

People with disabilities and the aging population face significant barriers to using public transportation, limiting access to healthcare, employment, education, and daily activities. This study presents a critical review of Fredericksburg’s bus system, FREDGO!, examining current transportation infrastructure from the perspectives of these communities. Data was collected through bus stop site visits, with each location photographically documented. The analysis identifies inaccessible infrastructure, such as incomplete sidewalks, lack of shelter, and absence of seating, that discourages disabled and older adults from using public transit. This case study highlights key accessibility challenges that should be addressed when designing inclusive transportation systems. It also offers targeted recommendations for how the City of Fredericksburg can move forward with infrastructure improvements.
