Abstract

This presentation reports the findings of the FXBG Beautiful preservation planning lab project. The research team evaluated the evolution of downtown Fredericksburg’s streetscape and storefronts.

The methodology integrated GIS mapping of public assets with qualitative data gathered from interviews with local business owners across the retail, service, and hospitality sectors. Research was further supported by comparative analyses of national placemaking trends and local regulatory frameworks. Findings reveal trends in furniture coverage and highlight opportunities for enhancing the pedestrian experience through improved storefront design.

The presentation concludes with data-driven recommendations for the City of Fredericksburg and provides a suite of design resources intended to help business owners align their storefront aesthetics with municipal guidelines. Ultimately, the study serves as a strategic roadmap for fostering economic growth and maintaining the visual character of the Downtown Core.
